A guided tour with BEACON ADVENTURE, the local sea-kayak outfit: paddle the clear water off the Ashizuri coast and explore sea caves, in small groups with an experienced guide. Life jackets are provided free, and you get the photos from the tour as a gift. A 1.6 km arc of white sand backed by pine forest — the beach that put Tosashimizu on the surf map. Beach break over sand and reef, sheltered from the wind by the cape, rarely crowded. Loggerhead turtles nest here in summer.松林を背にした白砂の浜が1.6kmの弧を描く。土佐清水をサーフの地図に載せた浜です。砂とリーフのビーチブレイクで、岬のおかげで風に強く、混まない。夏はアカウミガメが産卵に来ます。

The story of Manjirō: a 14-year-old fisherman shipwrecked in 1841, rescued by an American whaler, the first Japanese to live in the USA — and later the interpreter who helped open Japan. Trick art, wave projections, a café upstairs.14歳で漂流し、アメリカの捕鯨船に救われ、アメリカで暮らした最初の日本人になり、のちに開国の通訳を務めた万次郎の物語。トリックアートや波の映像、2階にはカフェも。

A tiny fishing village on the west side of the cape road, with Manjirō’s thatched house rebuilt from a photograph. Peek inside at how a poor fisherman’s family lived in the 1830s. Free.岬へ向かう西回りの道沿いの小さな漁村。写真をもとに復元された茅葺きの生家があり、江戸後期の貧しい漁師の暮らしをのぞけます。無料。
No car park — leave the car by the ward office and walk the lane past the post office.専用駐車場はありません。区長場のあたりに寄せて、郵便局の先の路地を歩いて。

Where the Kuroshio current first touches Japan. Granite cliffs, white swirling tide lines, a shrine to the sea god perched on the rock — and some of the most famous rock-fishing spots in the country.黒潮が日本列島に最初にぶつかる場所。花崗岩の断崖、渦を巻く白い潮目、岩山の上の竜宮神社。磯釣りの聖地でもあります。
Two lookouts — the signs are tiny, so slow down. Bring the fishing rod if you have one.展望台は2つ。案内板が小さいので見落とし注意。竿があれば持っていって。

A strangler fig more than 300 years old, 22 m tall with branches spreading 36 m — Japan’s first natural-monument tree on Shikoku, in the grounds of a little shrine. Nearby: a boulder swallowed by another fig, and a blue sea cave at the fishing harbor.樹齢300年超、高さ22m、枝張り36mの「締め殺しの木」アコウ。四国で最初に国の天然記念物になった木で、小さな天満宮の境内に立っています。近くに石を抱いたアコウと、青の洞窟のような海老洞も。

The southern tip of Shikoku. A 270° horizon that visibly curves, a white lighthouse lit since 1914, and the Kuroshio crashing on the rocks below. Sunrise spot, first-sunrise-of-the-year spot, and a 2 km nature trail through a camellia tunnel.四国最南端。270度の水平線が弧を描いて地球の丸さがわかる展望台、1914年から灯る白い灯台、下で砕ける黒潮。朝日の名所で、椿のトンネルをくぐる2kmの遊歩道もあります。
Go for sunrise, walk to Tengu-no-hana, then the temple. Free parking, three car parks.朝日を見て、天狗の鼻まで歩いて、お寺へ。駐車場は3か所とも無料。

The southernmost of the 88 temples, founded by Kōbō Daishi, at the end of the longest leg of the whole pilgrimage — 90 km from Temple 37. Walking henro arrive here with a very specific look on their faces.弘法大師が開いた四国最南端の札所。37番からは約90km、八十八ヶ所でいちばん長い区間の終点です。歩き遍路がここに着いたときの顔は、ちょっと特別。
Stamp office 7:00–17:00. The camellia tunnel starts right across the road.納経は7〜17時。椿のトンネルは道の向かいから始まります。

A 16 m high granite sea arch — Japan’s biggest of its kind — that looks like a heart from the right angle. Above it, a free terraced foot bath fed by Ashizuri hot-spring water, facing the Pacific.高さ16m、花崗岩の海食洞門としては日本一の大きさ。角度によってはハート形に見える恋のパワースポット。その上には、あしずり温泉を引いた無料の足湯が太平洋を向いて並んでいます。
The stairs down to the arch are steep — the climb back is the workout. Foot bath 8:00–19:00, closed Wednesdays.洞門への階段は急で、帰りの登りが効きます。足湯は8〜19時、水曜休み。

The big resort on the cape, rebuilt from the old Pacific Hotel: an open-air bath looking straight out over the Pacific, fed by the 1,200-year-old Ashizuri hot spring. Day visitors are welcome in the evening — the perfect end to a cape day before the drive back to the garage.岬の上の大きなリゾート。旧・足摺パシフィックホテル花椿を建て直したもので、太平洋を正面に見る露天風呂に、1200年の歴史をもつあしずり温泉が引かれています。日帰り入浴は夕方から。岬を歩いた日の締めにちょうどいい。
Day-use bath in the evening (around 16:00–21:00, about ¥1,000 — check before you go). Go at sunset.日帰り入浴は夕方から夜（16〜21時ごろ・1,000円前後、出かける前に確認を）。狙いは夕日の時間。

A grassy plateau above the cape where Jōmon people left their tools, ringed by 6–7 m granite boulders that may be a giant stone circle. Climb between the stones for a sea view nobody else is looking at.岬の上の草原に縄文の石器が眠り、高さ6〜7mの花崗岩が林立する巨石群。巨大なストーンサークルかもしれないと言われています。石の間を登ると、誰もいない海の眺め。
Come via the Camellia Road (pref. route 348). The route-27 side is a single-lane squeeze.椿の道（県道348号）から入って。県道27号側は道が細くてすれ違えません。

Sandstone carved by wind and waves into honeycombs, ripples and rock ‘bamboo’ — a 30–40 minute walk around the shore. The glass-bottom boat crosses over Japan’s biggest coral colony to Minokoshi, the coast you can only reach by sea.風と波が砂岩を削った蜂の巣岩や大竹・小竹。海岸をぐるっと歩いて30〜40分。グラスボートは国内最大級のシコロサンゴの上を渡って、船でしか行けない見残し海岸へ。
Boats run all day, every 40 minutes or so; no booking needed. Last boat for landing at Minokoshi is mid-afternoon.船はだいたい40分おき、予約なしでOK。見残しに上陸するなら午後早めの便まで。

The prefectural aquarium at Tatsukushi, built around the sea you just walked past: the coral, the reef fish, the forest above. A clean, modern hour — ideal on a rainy day or between surfs.竜串の海と足摺の森をそのまま再現した県立水族館。さっき歩いた海の中身を見に行く感じです。雨の日や波待ちの1時間にちょうどいい。
Open daily 9:00–17:00. Free parking. Pair it with the glass-bottom boat next door.9〜17時、無休。駐車無料。隣のグラスボートとセットでどうぞ。

‘The Ashizuri of the west’: a small brick lighthouse from 1911, still working, on a cape of striped sandstone and sea caves. A haiku poet once wrote you haven’t seen Tosa until you’ve seen this coast.「西の足摺岬」。1911年からずっと現役のレンガ造りの小さな灯台と、縞模様の岩と海食洞窟。俳人が「叶崎を見ずして土佐風景を見たとは言えない」と書いた岬です。
The name means ‘wishes come true’. Stop at the Kuroshio lookout right after the tunnel, too.「願いが叶う」岬。トンネルを出てすぐの黒潮展望台にも寄って。

A tiny island joined to the mainland by a bridge, with water so clear the boats look like they’re floating in air. Shallow, calm, sandy — this is the beach I recommend to families with small kids. Snorkel from the shore and you’ll see fish within minutes.橋でつながった小さな島。海が透きとおりすぎて、船が宙に浮いて見えることで有名です。浅くて穏やかで砂地なので、小さな子ども連れの家族にはここをすすめています。浜からシュノーケルすれば数分で魚に会えます。
Go early in summer — the car parks are small and fill up. Make a day of it with the Sunny Road drive there and back.夏は早めに出発を。駐車場が小さくてすぐ埋まります。行き帰りのサニーロードのドライブ込みで一日コースに。

The coast road from town past Tatsukushi and Kanaezaki to Ōtsuki — sea on one side, cliffs on the other, named in 1987 for the southern sun (and because 3-2-1 sounds like ‘sunny’ in Japanese). Riders come to Shikoku for this stretch.町から竜串、叶崎を過ぎて大月町へ続く海沿いの道。片側は海、片側は崖。「南国の陽光」と3・2・1の語呂で1987年に名づけられました。ライダーはこの区間のために四国に来ます。
Ride it in the late afternoon, westbound, with the sun on the water. Then come back for beer.夕方、西向きに走ると海に光が落ちてきれい。戻ってきてビールをどうぞ。

A short walk from the garage, and a time machine: the old public bath is exactly as it was — hot bath, sauna, cold plunge, and a row of vintage Shōwa-era massage chairs kept in beautiful condition. They still cost 20 yen. Twenty. Bring coins.宿から歩いてすぐ、そこはタイムマシン。熱い湯、サウナ、水風呂、そして昭和のマッサージ機が今もきれいなまま並んでいます。料金は昭和のまま20円。小銭を持っていって。

Town町なかA few minutes on foot — right by Asahi-yu徒歩数分・旭湯のすぐそば
Around the bath, the little lanes of ‘snack’ bars are still pure Shōwa: neon signs, counter seats, a mama-san who pours, karaoke somewhere in the back. Nothing here was designed for tourists, which is exactly why it’s wonderful.銭湯のまわりの路地には、昭和のスナック街がそのまま残っています。ネオンの看板、カウンター、お酒を注いでくれるママ、奥から聞こえるカラオケ。観光客向けに作られたものが何もない。だから最高なんです。
Bath first, then a drink. Pick a door with the light on, walk in, and say you’re staying at the garage.風呂のあとに一杯。灯りのついた扉を開けて、「ガレージに泊まってる」と言えば話が早い。

The local dining spot a short walk from the garage, and the place for Shimizu saba sashimi — hand-line-caught mackerel so fresh it’s eaten raw, thick-cut and glossy. Lunch and dinner, set meals and izakaya dishes.宿から歩いて行ける町の食堂。ここの清水さばの刺身がうまい。一本釣りで活かしたまま港へ運ばれる鯖を、厚めに切って生で食べる。昼も夜もやっていて、定食も一品料理もあります。

Spotted mackerel caught one at a time on hand lines and kept alive until it reaches the harbor — the town’s brand fish, eaten raw as sashimi or lightly seared. Fattest from autumn to winter.立縄で一匹ずつ釣って、生きたまま港へ運ぶブランドのゴマサバ。刺身か、さっと炙ったたたきで。秋から冬、12〜2月がいちばん脂がのっています。

A paper-thin flour-and-egg pancake grilled with spring onion, fish-cake, bonito flakes and seaweed, folded over and hit with spicy sauce. Sixty-plus years of local soul food for a few hundred yen.小麦粉と卵の生地を鉄板で薄く伸ばし、ネギ・じゃこ天・かつお粉・青のりをのせて焼き、スパイシーなソースで。60年以上続く土佐清水のソウルフードです。
The original shop, Nishimura, is a short walk. Get two.元祖の西村は歩いてすぐ。2枚いっとこう。

A little market run by a chicken farm: eggs from next door, local vegetables and whatever the boats brought in. Open every day from morning to evening — perfect for the outdoor kitchen and the BBQ.養鶏場が直営する小さな市。隣で採れた卵、地元の野菜、その日の魚。ほぼ年中無休で朝から夕方まで。外キッチンとBBQの買い出しにどうぞ。
Buy the fish here, clean it in our outdoor kitchen, grill it in the garage. That’s the whole plan.ここで魚を買って、外キッチンで捌いて、ガレージで焼く。それで一日の計画は完成。

Getting around回り方
Borrow one from the garage. The harbor, the sentō, the konbini and the izakaya are all pedal-sized. Ōki Beach is a breezy 3.9 km along the coast road — bring the board rack if you’re surfing.ガレージの自転車をどうぞ。港も銭湯もコンビニも飲み屋も、ぜんぶ自転車サイズ。大岐の浜までは海沿いを3.9km、いい風です。
Cape Ashizuri is about 30 minutes south, Tatsukushi about 20 minutes west. The Sunny Road (R321) hugs the sea the whole way — the drive is half the point. Free parking at the garage.足摺岬まで車で約30分、竜串まで約20分。サニーロード（国道321号）はずっと海沿いで、走ること自体が楽しい道です。宿の駐車場は無料。
Kōchi Seinan Kōtsū buses leave from the town (Shimizu Plaza Pal / bus center): about 50 minutes to Cape Ashizuri via either side of the peninsula, about 20 minutes west to Tatsukushi on the Sukumo line. Only a handful a day and fewer on Sundays — check the timetable the night before.高知西南交通のバスが町なか（清水プラザパル前・バスセンター）から出ています。足摺岬まで東回り・西回りどちらも約50分、宿毛行きで竜串（海底館前）まで約20分。1日数本で日曜はさらに減るので、前の晩に時刻表を確認しておくのが安全。
